THE HAGUE 12 December 2018 – The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and the full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of all its provisions, during the fourth Special Session of the Conference of States Parties to Review the Operation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (fourth Review Conference) held in The Hague, The Netherlands on 21-30 November 2018.
Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Convention (OPCW) and Ambassador to Netherlands Jaime Victor B. Ledda highlighted in the national statement that the expertise shared generously by the OPCW with the Philippines supports the government’s efforts, through the Anti-Terrorism Council/Philippine National Authority for CWC, in developing policies and initiatives to ensure that not only can the Philippines take prompt action and provide effective assistance during an actual instance of chemical terrorist attack, but also build valuable capability to deter such acts.
Ambassador Ledda also expressed the Philippines’ strong belief that international cooperation in the elimination of chemical weapons stockpiles and the non-proliferation of chemical weapons remain a continuing urgent concern.
The Review Conference occurs once every five years. It followed after the 23rd Conference of States Parties this year. It is an opportunity for all States Parties to review the operations of the Chemical Weapons Convention and set a strategic direction for the OPCW for the next five years and beyond. END
