NY Assemblyman Honors Filipino-Americans in Awarding Ceremony

NEW YORK 18 November 2018 – Eight Filipino and Filipino-American individuals and organizations were honored by New York State Assemblyman Brian Barnwell during his office’s celebrations of Filipino-American History Month last 26 October 2018 at Artefixe Gallery in Woodside, Queens.

Assemblyman Barnwell noted in his welcome remarks that Filipinos comprise some of his most active and productive constituents in New York State’s Assembly District 30 in Queens, where majority of Filipinos in New York City reside.

Representing the Philippine Consulate General in New York, Consul Khrystina Corpuz Popov remarked, “the Consulate truly appreciates that local U.S. government units and American politicians embrace the Philippine heritage and recognize the contributions of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in your jurisdictions.”

Manhattan Representative Aries Dela Cruz of the Office of Governor Andrew Cuomo graced the event with a message from the Governor recognizing the importance of Filipino-American History Month as a reminder of the growing influence of the Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in New York State.

The awards were granted to: Broadway artist Karla Garcia, the first Hamilton cast member; Fiesta in America, the biggest Filipino trade and cultural show in the US Northeast; Friends of the Philippines Society USA, organizers of the Noli Me Tangere Opera and Explore Islands Philippines at the Grand Central Station; Fresh Off the Boat Boys (FOBBS) Arts Collective, a group of street artists in New York; the Knights of Rizal New York City Chapter; Natalie Giron, Founder of MrsGiron Tutoring and Learning Center; Philippine Nurses Association – New York; and a posthumous award to Dr. Dawn Mabilon, a respected historian, author, filmmaker and community leader.
