MADRID 20 December 2018 – A biography of Gregoria de Jesus, hero of the Philippine Revolution, entitled “Bayani Biographies: Gregoria de Jesus” was written for eight to 12-year-olds was launched in Madrid by its author Natasha Kintanar and the Philippine Embassy in Madrid at Tahanan - Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Espino in Madrid on 16 December 2018.

Around 20 children and their parents joined the launch and book signing.

A chapter on the development of Gregoria de Jesus’ relationship with Andres Bonifacio, leader of the revolution and a man more than 10 years her senior, was read by Third Secretary Raisa Mabayo and tackles the lengths that a then 18-year-old Gregoria went through to be with and marry Bonifacio, while also being careful to maintain respect and obedience to her parents who were at first opposed to the relationship.

“She was a warrior of the revolution, but also a warrior of love,” according to Ms. Kintanar. Asked why the book was of importance to Filipinos, especially second-generation Filipinos in Madrid, the author replied that it was crucial for children of the diaspora to understand their roots, the strength of their ancestors and the sacrifices they went through in order for the Philippines to become an independent country equal to Spain.

She also quoted Gregoria de Jesus’ favorite adage, “Palaging buo ang loob,” which reflects the importance of giving one’s best in all endeavors, as a helpful lesson and guide for both children and their parents.

“Bayani Biographies: Gregoria de Jesus” is published by Saint Matthews publishing and is available in the Philippines at Fully Booked bookstores and online through www.lazada.ph. END
