VIENTIANE 11 January 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Vientiane partnered with tenor and University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman-College of Music Associate Professor Dr. Ramon Acoymo to conduct a two-day voice workshop from 15-16 December 2018 and seminar for the Filipino community in Laos.

A total of 96 members of the Filipino community attended the event, which featured pop, classical and holiday songs from Dr. Acoymo and the workshop participants.

Dr. Acoymo covered the philosophies of singing, the schools of singing pedagogy, and the seven interactive components and dimensions of singing technique and expressivity. He supplemented these topics with his experiences as a performer and a voice teacher. His practical approach to teaching also allowed the participants to apply his teachings in their singing.

The UP Professor emphasized that singing is touching people’s hearts, while sound production is just making sound. He said that in order to be able to sing, one must be sincere in the delivery of the performance.

The Embassy also organized a mini-concert featuring Dr. Acoymo and the participants of the seminar. He coached the workshop participants on their chosen song numbers by giving them pointers and recalling techniques learned during the workshop that may be incorporated in their respective performances.

Dr. Acoymo has served as Dean of the UP College of Music and Chair of the College’s Department of Voice, Music Theater and Dance. He has garnered several awards, including first prize in the United States National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition, the UP Chancellor’s Awardee for Most Outstanding Classical Musician, and Most Outstanding Male Classical Singer by the ALIW Foudnation Hall of Fame, among others.

He has performed as a member of the UP Madrigal Singers, the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, as well as various solo performances in the United States and Europe. END
