PH High School Wins Zayed Sustainability Prize 2019 Award

ABU DHABI 18 January 2019 – A Filipino high school garnered top honors at the prestigious Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Global High Schools Category–East Asia and the Pacific in awarding ceremonies held on 14 January 2019. 

Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Hjayceelyn M. Quintana celebrated with Muntinlupa National High School, which bested more than 2,000 applications submitted, and won the US$100,000 international prize. 

Muntinlupa National High School Head Teacher Ma. Regaele A. Olarte received the award presented by no less than the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who graced the annual event.

The awards ceremony was also attended by UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, along with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, Angolan President Joao Lourenco, Seychellois President Danny Faure, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Namibian President Hage Geingob, and Montenegrin President Milo Dukanovic, among others.

The school’s project “RevAMP: Revitalized Algae Micro-farm Projects” aims to build a scalable solar-powered micro-farm with photo-bioreactors to produce high-value products from green algae (Chlorella Vulgaris) that are sustainable and profitable.

The project will provide a highly innovative and revolutionary way for green algae cultivation towards environmental stewardship, education and scientific research, as well as livelihood and business opportunities for their school and the whole community.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize recognizes impactful, innovative and inspirational sustainability solutions across five categories: health, food, energy, water and global high schools.

The awarding ceremony was held together with the opening of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2019 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. END
