Secretary Locsin Reaffirms PH Support to UN Economic and Social Council

NEW YORK 22 January 2019n – Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin Jr. reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening the work of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), under the Presidency of Permanent Representative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Inga Rhonda King on 18 December 2018.
Secretary Locsin called on the UN ECOSOC President at the UN Headquarters in New York on 18 December 2018 and reassured Ambassador King of the Philippines’ full support in her leadership’s priorities, specifically in strengthening UN ECOSOC’s role and authority in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and in ensuring the successful conduct of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2019.
The Secretary likewise underlined the country’s support for the efforts of the ECOSOC President towards a strengthened multilateral system.
Ambassador King expressed her appreciation for the Philippines’ active support and engagement in the ECOSOC Bureau, and noted the critical role of the country in chairing the Operational Activities for Development Segment, in its capacity as UN ECOSOC Vice President from 21 to 23 May 2019.
The ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the UN that provides a platform for fostering debate and forging consensus on various issues focusing on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development to achieve internationally agreed goals. END
