JAKARTA 29 January 2019 – As part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Philippines-Indonesia bilateral relations, Ambassador to Indonesia Lee Hiong T. Wee visited Bunga Matahari International School and Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh and Sekolah Sukma Bangsa in Pidie on 17 January 2019.
During the school visits, Ambassador Wee highlighted the growing cooperation of the Philippines and Indonesia on the education sector. He expressed hope that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Basic and Secondary Education and Letter of Intent on Islamic Education Cooperation signed by the two countries in 2018 will lead to more student exchanges and meaningful collaboration.
The three schools—Bunga Matahari International School, Syiah Kuala University and Sekolah Sukma Bangsa—promote the deepening of friendship between the Philippines and Indonesia.
Established after the devastating tsunami in 2004, Bunga Matahari International School was founded by Pampanga native Victoria Gelbolingo. Today, 14 years after, she continues to manage the school.
The premier university in Aceh with nearly 30,000 students, Syiah Kuala University has benefitted from scholarships which brought nearly 25 of its senior faculty members to the Philippines for studies in the 1980s.
More than 20 Filipino students from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) are currently studying at Sekolah Sukma Bangsa. With the Filipino students at senior high school about to graduate, the Embassy conducted a career guidance seminar in collaboration with the school.
In his inspirational speech, Ambassador Wee congratulated the Filipino students for doing well at school. He expressed hope that the Filipino students will contribute to the development of their communities, and the deepening of friendship between the two countries. END
