WASHINGTON, D.C. 13 February 2019 — The Philippines highlighted its continued commitment to address the prevailing threat of terrorism and the enablers of terrorists and terrorist organizations, such as illegal trade and trafficking of illegal drugs at the “Meeting of the Ministers of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS” held at the US Department of State on 06 February 2019.

Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez led the Philippine delegation, where he took the opportunity to highlight the Philippine government’s successful efforts to combat the siege of Marawi with the help of allies, especially the U.S.

The Ambassador also underscored the Philippines’ commitment, as a responsible member of the international community, to doing its part in the global efforts to completely annihilate ISIS.

The meeting was hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, and is considered to be the coalition’s largest gathering to date of representatives from the coalition’s 79 members.  The Philippines is the 75th member of the coalition, having joined in early 2018.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Ambassador Romualdez also had the chance to engage with Lieutenant General Michael Negata, Director for Strategic Planning of the National Counterterrorism Center on the global and trans-regional threats posed by ISIS.

The meeting was also an opportunity for U.S. President Donald J. Trump to speak on American priorities in the fight against ISIS, and to commend the efforts of the coalition as valuable partners.

Representatives from the Embassy, including Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Brigadier General Marlo Guloy, joined Ambassador Romualdez as members of the Philippine delegation to the meeting. END
