HONG KONG 15 February 2019 – Team Philippines, comprising five leading universities in the country under the stewardship of the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, successfully conducted a four-day education caravan in Hong Kong ending on 27 January 2019.
The education caravan’s main event was Team Philippines’ participation at the International Exchange Village of the Education and Careers Expo organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 24-27 January.
Consul General to Hong Kong Antonio A. Morales attended the opening ceremony as one of the VIP guests.
“This has been the most successful in the Philippines’ participation in the Expo since we started joining in 2017,” said University of the Philippines Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs Professor Jose Wendell P. Capili.
For the third straight year, the country’s top institutions at the tertiary level namely UP, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), and De La Salle University (DLSU) participated at the Expo.
Assistant to the Director for Admission Nenette P. Zabala and Admission Officer Johnson G. Fajardo represented ADMU, while Strategic Communications Officer AA dela Cruz and Internal Marketing and Merchandise Coordinator Kalikasan Castillo represented DLSU.
Apart from Professor Capili, UP was also represented by its Information Office Director Prof. Sir Anril P. Tiatco, and College of Arts and Letters faculty member and UP Diliman Information Office Program Development Associate Davidson G. Oliveros.
This year’s Team Philippines was significantly boosted by the inaugural participation of Silliman University and University of Sto. Tomas, represented respectively by Registrar and Admissions Officer Dr. Giovanni T. Macahig, and Office of Admissions Marketing Officer Steve Michael M. Moore.
The Expo featured 880 educational institutions, organizations, consulates and other stakeholders from 22 countries and regions. Philippine universities and Consulate representatives entertained queries from students, parents and general public at the event.
The five universities also made presentations about studying in the Philippines on three successive days at the Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) on 24 January, at the Expo on 25 January, and at the Consulate General for the Filipino community on 27 January.
According to Delia Hip Wo’s math teacher and career guidance counselor Henry Wong, one of four such public secondary schools subsidized by the Hong Kong Government to extend affordable quality education to children of local ethnic communities including Filipinos, it was the first-ever talk at the said school on educational opportunities in the Philippines.
During the full-house talk at the Consulate General, Consul General Morales highlighted that one of the goals of many overseas Filipino workers is to provide the best education for their families, and the talk was an excellent opportunity to know more about education programs in the Philippines, as well as available scholarships and student financial aid for their families back home.
Prior to their participation at the education caravan, the representatives from the five Philippine universities paid a courtesy call on Consul General Morales on 24 January.
The Team Philippines education caravan is signature education diplomacy initiative of the Consulate to promote the country’s world-class education programs. END
