SAN FRANCISCO 15 February 2019 A memoir of Juanita Tamayo-Lott, Filipino American author of “Golden Children: Legacy of Ethnic Studies, SF State”, was launched in San Francisco by its author, in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco and the Philippine American Writers and Artists (PAWA), at the Romulo Hall of the Philippine Center on 06 February 2019.

In his remarks, Consul General to San Francisco Henry S. Bensurto Jr.said that he is both happy and honored to host the book launch of Filipino American author Ms. Tamayo-Lott.

Ms. Tamayo-Lott is a trailblazer whose roots could be traced to the migration of her family from the Philippines to the United States in a bid to chase the proverbial American Dream. “In spite of her parents’ and her own persistence and Juanita’s eventual success in the field of education and federal government career, she never forgot her roots as a Filipino and even went beyond honoring the legacy of her ancestors,” added Consul General Bensurto.

The Consul General also emphasized that Ms. Tamayo-Lott, “along with Carlos Bulosan, Larry Itliong, and most recently, Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, is one of those names that every Filipino American should remember because they all worked towards achieving recognition, greater equality and respect for Filipinos and our history.”

During the Author’s Talk, the Filipino author shared how she worked shoulder-to-shoulder with other ethnic minority student leaders in San Francisco to fight discrimination. She became one of the strikers in the historic 1968 San Francisco State Black Student Union and Third World Liberation Front strike, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2018, among many stories and anecdotes that she shared that resulted in the successful establishment of a College of Ethnic Studies at the San Francisco State in 1969.

The event was attended by friends from the academe, members of the Filipino American community, Consulate General officers and staff, including its attached agencies, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center, and Philippine Department of Tourism, and the Consul General’s wife Madame Ann Mariza Sanchez-Bensurto, President of the League of San Francisco Consular Corps.
