Youth Commissioner Highlights Successes of Task Force Bangon Marawi, Role of Youth at the UN

NEW YORK 26 February 2019 – The Philippines shared its experiences on the empowerment of youth affected by human-made disasters at the 57th session of the Commission for Social Development during its high-level panel discussion held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 11-21 February 2019.

Philippine Youth Commissioner Victor Del Rosario addressed representatives from Member States, United Nations agencies, and civil society organizations, where he shared youth empowerment in times of crisis. 

“Promoting the involvement and empowerment of youth in governance is one way of reducing the negative impact of man-made disasters on the youth,” Commissioner Del Rosario said in his statement.

Commissioner Del Rosario outlined the initiatives being undertaken by the government through the Task Force Bangon Marawi, Bangon Para sa Kapayapaan Program - Usap Tayo Peace Education for Communities, National Youth Empowerment Training Program and the Youth Peace Table.

The Commissioner cited the establishment of youth hubs, and child and youth-friendly spaces for those who are vulnerable to violence, abuse, neglect or exploitation. He also highlighted that a total of 208 youth participants in the cities of Marawi and Iligan have undergone the training program aimed at countering discrimination and preventing extremism as well as the role of the Sangguniang Kabataan members and other youth volunteers in assisting and supporting psycho-social services provided by professionals to displaced persons.
