27 January 2014- The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the commencement of the search for nominees for the 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas.
Recognizing the significant role of overseas Filipinos in national development, the Philippine Government, through the Commission of Filipinos Overseas (CFO), conducted various activities to honor overseas Filipinos for their exemplary achievements and contributions. One of these activities is the conferring of awards to Filipino individuals and organizations overseas.
The Awards have been institutionalized thru Executive Order No. 498 issued by former President Corazon Aquino, naming it the Presidential Awards for Filipinos and Organizations Overseas. It is conferred by the President of the Philippines every two years on meritorious individuals and organizations overseas to give the highest recognition to their work in the service of Filipino community or nation.
There are four categories of Awards, namely:
• Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) Award conferred on Filipino associations or individuals for their excellent or significant contribution to reconstruction, progress and development in the Philippines.
• Kaanib ng Bayan Award conferred of foreign individuals or organizations for their exceptional or significant contribution to Philippine reconstruction, progress and development.
• Banaag Award conferred on Filipino individuals or associations for their significant contribution to advance the cause or promote the interests of overseas Filipino communities.
• Pamana ng Pilipino Award conferred on Filipinos overseas, who, in exemplifying the talent and industry of the Filipino, have brought the country honor and recognition.
The nomination process will end on May 31, 2014.
It will be recalled that former President Corazon Aquino issued Proclamation No 276 declaring December of every year as Month of Overseas Filipinos as a tribute to overseas Filipinos, to encourage their participation in the development activities of the country.
