PH Consulate General Celebrates Lunar New Year with Asian American Coalition of Chicago

CHICAGO 04 March 2019 – The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago participated in the 36th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration of the Asian American Coalition of Chicago with the theme “One World, One Vision” held at Hyatt Regency O’Hare on 22 February 2019.

In her remarks, Consul General Jamoralin lauded the achievements and contributions of the Asian-American community in Chicago. She underscored that more than 20 million Asian Americans serve as an important pillar of United States economic resilience and growth.

She encouraged the Asian community to continue to provide mutual support for its members to empower them, and also reminded the community to exercise their right to vote and make a difference in the city elections.

Together with DePaul University Filipino-American President Dr. Amado Gabriel Esteban and Illinois Senator Laura Murphy, Consul General Jamoralin, presented plaques to the awardees.

Among the awardees were Filipino-American pediatrician and specialist in adolescent medicine Dr. Nida Blankas-Hernaez for the Professional category), and a student belonging to the top one percent of her class and elite volleyball athlete at DePaul College Prep Jade Mosquera for the Youth category. The coalition also recognized Federation of Philippine American Chambers of Commerce president Marie Cunning.

The event’s main awardees were former First Lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff Tina Tchen, and television network ABC7 Chicago for its significant contribution to the Asian American community.

During the gala, Consul General Jamoralin also had the opportunity to speak with Illinois government officials including keynote speaker and member of the US-Philippines Friendship Caucus Congresswoman Jan Schakowski, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, State Senator Laura Murphy, and Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs.

The food for the gala was prepared by Filipino-American assistant executive chef at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Rico Carpio. Niles North High School “Kapit Bayan” Dance Group performed a traditional Badjao dance of courtship. END
