28 January 2014 - Philippine Ambassador to Turkey Maria Rowena Sanchez with Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas met on January 20 and discussed Istanbul’s comprehensive urban development plan and strong city management that has allowed its transformation into a world-class municipality, providing the best quality of life for its citizens and residents. 

Citing the Philippine Government’s plan to “ build back better” in Central Visayas, Ambassador Sanchez stated that there are opportunities for investors in the area devasted by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) particularly in infrastructure and construction.  Mayor Topbas expressed his support for the reconstruction plan and offered to help a technical team from the Philippines which may to come Turkey to learn and share best practices on urban planning and city administration. 

Furthermore, Ambassador Sanchez and Mayor Topbas agreed to support the project of Filipino artist Rowena Ulayan-Tuzcuoglu, who is organizing an international painting exhibit to benefit the victims of Typhoon Yolanda in 2014.

Ambassador Sanchez also met with Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlunbul  and discussed the warm relations between the Philippines and Turkey. They discussed the ancient and historic and cultural landmarks of the province.  Noting the numerous Filipino visitors to Istanbul, Ambassador Sanchez expressed the hope that more Turkish tourists will visit the Philippines soon. Governor Mutlunbul expressed optimism that this could be achieved as more Turkish citizens become aware of the tourist attractions in the Philippines. The Governor also promised to visit the Philippines at the earliest opportunity.   END
