PH Embassy in Canberra Holds Mobile Consular Mission in Nauru

CANBERRA 06 March 2019 – As part of its mandate to provide consular services to Filipinos under its jurisdiction, the Philippine Embassy in Canberra conducted a mobile consular mission to Nauru on 27-28 February 2019.
A total of 36 among the estimated 65 Filipino residents of Nauru applied for a Philippine e-Passports, including three first-time applicants.
The Embassy team was headed by Consul General Jim San Agustin and included Labor Attaché Cynthia Lamban and Passport Officer Albert Francia.
Immediately after the consular mission, the Embassy team held a dialogue with the Filipino community in Nauru to discuss Philippine government programs for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Among the topics discussed were the working conditions in Nauru, workplace rights and resources for migrant workers, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) regulations governing OFWs and their employers, and the availment of the Assistance-to-Nationals funds and the Legal Assistance Funds by qualified beneficiaries.
The Embassy team also had discussions with Parliament Member and Capelle and Partners CEO Sean Oppenheimer and Ronphos Corporation Chief Executive Officer Robert Mencel to ascertain the working conditions of Filipino employees and discuss measures to meet the increasing demand of Nauru employers, including state-owned enterprises, for Filipino professionals and skilled workers.
During the meeting with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Director of International Affairs Christiana Detenamo, Consul General San Agustin and Labor Attaché Lamban discussed issues of mutual interest between the Philippines and Nauru including the status of Filipino workers in Nauru and the proposed official visit of Ambassador to Australia Hellen B. De La Vega to present her credentials as non-resident Ambassador to Nauru. END
