PH Embassy in Damascus Commemorates 33rd Anniversary of EDSA Revolution

DAMASCUS 07 March 2019 — On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the EDSA Revolution, the Philippine Embassy in Damascus commemorated the event by conducting a series of activities on 24 February 2019 with the members of the Filipino community, and on 25 February 2019 at the Chancery with Embassy personnel and wards of the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC).

On the eve of EDSA Day, the Embassy conducted an audiovisual presentation featuring the life of former President Corazon C. Aquino and her role in the revolution which restored democracy in the Philippines. A financial literacy seminar, conducted by Vice Consul Al-Bari Macalawan, and a town hall meeting with Embassy officials were also held to mark the occasion.

In his remarks, Charge d’ Affaires, e.p. and Consul General Alex V. Lamadrid highlighted the important role of President Aquino in leading the country after more than 20 years of dictatorship. He encouraged the attendees to emulate the positive values of the late former President as a woman leader.

During the financial literacy seminar, Vice Consul Macalawan explained the importance of planning as well as savings and investments vehicles.

In the morning of the EDSA anniversary, the Embassy held a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a thanksgiving mass at the Embassy chancery. Present during the flag-raising ceremony were Embassy personnel and FWRC wards.

At the conclusion of the flag-raising ceremony, Vice Consul Macalawan read the EDSA Day message of President Rodrigo Duterte. It was followed by a Thanksgiving Mass held at the Embassy’s FWRC, officiated by Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Damascus parish priest Father Fadi Azar.

A total of 78 participants composed of Embassy personnel, members of the Filipino community in Syria, and wards at the Embassy’s FWRC attended the two-day celebrations.

The two-day celebration was capped by a sumptuous traditional Filipino lunch and breakfast offered by the Embassy.  END
