JAKARTA 12 March 2019 – The Philippine Embassy and Permanent Mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta—along with Deputy Speaker of the House Munir M. Arbison, Commission on Audit (COA) Chairperson Michael G. Aguinaldo, and their delegation—attended the ASEAN-ASEAN Supreme Audit Institutions (ASEANSAI)-ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) joint seminar: “Laying the Foundation for Future Cooperation in Promoting Accountability and Transparency in ASEAN” on 26 February 2019 in Jakarta.
The joint seminar aims to enhance regional cooperation in promoting good governance, transparency and accountability by identifying common interests and concerns from the perspectives of ASEAN’s governments, parliaments, supreme audit institutions, and other ASEAN entities.
Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla gave the keynote speech of the opening ceremony of the joint seminar.
During the seminar, participants identified good practices in their respective work that they felt would help promote transparency and accountability in the public sector. They also recognized common interests and opportunities for future collaboration toward improving good governance in ASEAN.
The ASEANSAI is made up of government bodies whose role is to promote good governance and transparency in the public sector by ensuring the lawful implementation of a government’s national budget. In the case of the Philippines, the SAI is the COA, while for Indonesia, it is the Audit Board.
Meanwhile, the AIPA is designed to promote cooperation between governments and stakeholders to foster policies that benefit the general population, in terms of ensuring national budget transparency. For the Philippines and Indonesia, the House of Representatives and the Global Organization for Parliamentary Against Corruption (GOPAC) are AIPA members, respectively. The GOPAC Chair is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia. END
