PARIS 13 March 2019 – The Philippines took part for the first time as a Steering Committee member at the Sixth Meeting of the Steering Committee at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris, France on 11-12 March 2019.
At the panel debate entitled “Follow Up To The Global Education Meeting: Taking Stock and Capitalizing on Outcome,” Philippine representative and Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan emphasized that the country attaches the highest importance to education, and is committed to implement Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all.
Undersecretary Malaluan shared that the government is embarking on long-term planning for education, and is currently engaged in training teachers to build their competencies for them to effectively play their role as learning leaders of the 21st century.
The Undersecretary further highlighted the Philippines’ best practices and challenges in taking forward SDG 4 in a special session entitled 2019 Voluntary National Reviews.
Established in 2016, the Steering Committee is the global multi-stakeholder coordination mechanism for SDG 4. Hosted by UNESCO, it provides strategic guidance to member states and the education community, makes recommendations for catalytic action, advocates for adequate financing, and monitors progress toward education targets worldwide.
The Philippines became officially part of the Steering Committee in December 2018, and will serve as member until 2021. END
