11 Filipino Artists to Exhibit New Works in London

LONDON 29 March 2019 – Eleven Filipino contemporary artists will exhibit their works in Motions of This Kind: Propositions and Problems of Belatedness at the Brunei Gallery of the School of Oriental and African Studies University of London (SOAS) on 11 April to 22 June 2019.
The group exhibition features both newly commissioned work and materials from the Ifor B. Powell archive which have never been shown to the public before.
Among the featured artists are Yason Banal, Jon Cuyson, Lizza May David and Gabriel Rossell Santillàn, Cian Dayrit, Michelle Dizon, Eisa Jocson, Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho, Kat Medina and Mark Salvatus, who are prominent names in the Philippine art scene.
Motions of This Kind explores the historical and contemporary forces linking the Philippines with other global spheres in terms of social, political, and economic power. The title was taken from Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia, which considers the literal rise and fall of tides as well as the metaphorical ebb and flow of ideas.
With belatedness as the central theme, the exhibit explores the way that time and space are drawn together into tidal currents that can both hasten and delay circulation, disrupt or enable new pathways to emerge. It attempts to diagram the relationships of movement, and the politics of speed, from, within and between the Philippine islands.
“Because of its strategic location in the world, the Philippines sits at the crossroads of trading routes that are not only responsible for the exchange of goods but more importantly, for the exchange of culture and ideas. We take pride in supporting this project. Art is one of the most powerful ways to illustrate cross cultural connections,” Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo said.
Motions of this Kind is co-curated by practitioners from the UK and Philippines, namely Rafael Schacter, Renan Laru-an, and Merv Espina. The Foyle Special Collections Gallery is curated by Cristina Juan with support from Delphine Mercier.
The show incorporates a range of public programming, including a performance by artist Eisa Jocson in her first performance in the UK, a range of experimental film screenings, as well as a colloquium at SOAS on 12 April 2019.
All activities are open to the public.
