JAKART 01 April 2019 — Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong T. Wee and the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Jakarta (PTIC-Jakarta) paid a courtesy call on the Chairman (Minister) of the Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM) or the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Penny K. Lukito, MCP, in Jakarta on 14 March 2019.

BPOM is a government agency tasked to regulate and standardize policies and procedures on drug and food products in Indonesia. Among the primary tasks of BPOM are to license and certify food and pharmaceutical products, and ensure that these products comply with laws and regulations.

BPOM also coordinates with ASEAN governments to help harmonize standards across the region. The Indonesia and the Philippines comprise more than half of the region’s population.

The meeting is timely given a renewed emphasis on economic diplomacy and increased bilateral trade and investment. Under the leadership of Ambassador Wee, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, in coordination with PTIC-Jakarta, is pushing for more Philippine exports to Indonesia, including food and drug products that require BPOM certification and licensing.

Ambassador Wee discussed with Dr. Lukito ways to help facilitate the issuance of certification and permits for Philippine exporters to Indonesia by proposing a mechanism to streamline information sharing, best practices, and other areas of mutual interest.

Ambassador Wee thanked Dr. Lukito and BPOM for a productive meeting that highlighted the growing bilateral relationship between the Philippines and Indonesia, as the countries celebrate this year 70 years of the establishment of bilateral relations. END
