14 February 2014 – Upon the invitation of Abu Dhabi Police, the Philippine Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Grace Relucio Princesa gave a lecture on Philippine culture and customs to policemen in Abu Dhabi on January 30.
The presentation to the policemen included basic facts about the Philippines, the major ethnic groups, and a brief history of the country. Philippine cultural practices owing to its religion and history were also discussed during the lecture, including the various traits that Filipinos are known for, such as love for family, hospitality, respect for elders, and spirituality.
The lecture also discussed the push and pull factors why Filipino work overseas, as well as the contribution of overseas Filipinos to the Philippines and to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Other topics mentioned in the lecture include the common hobbies of Filipinos overseas like singing and sports, especially basketball, as well as the outgoing personality of Filipinos.
During the open forum, Ambassador Princesa welcomed the intent of most attendees to visit the Philippines. Tourism flyers were distributed during the lecture and posters featuring “It’s more fun in the Philippines” marketing campaign were put up.
The lecture was requested by the Abu Dhabi Police in line with its strategic vision of fostering and facilitating better communication between the community police and the big community groups in UAE including those from the Philippines.
Filipinos comprise the fourth largest community in UAE, next to India (1st), Pakistan (2nd), and Bangladesh (3rd). There is an estimated 500,000 Filipinos in the UAE. END
