BRUSSELS 04 April 2019 – Ambassador to Belgium Eduardo Jose A. de Vega invited European businessmen to invest in the Philippines in the First ASEAN Trade and Investment Forum in Belgium.

Ambassador de Vega sought support for enhancing trade and investment with the Philippines, and urged the resumption of negotiations for regional and bilateral trade agreements between the ASEAN and European regions.

“Business is business.  In ASEAN, we know enough to separate politics from trade,” Ambassador de Vega said in his remarks during the panel session entitled “Ambassadors’ Power Talk”.

“We know how the EU may think differently.  But if we take the case of two people engaged in business, and one says he’s a fan of Real Madrid and the other says he’s a fan of Milan, shall they decide not to do any business at all with each other then?” stressed the Ambassador.

“What do those differences in views have to do with fully exploring commercial opportunities?” he added.

The forum was initiated by the ASEAN Brussels Committee, consisting of all the resident ASEAN Ambassadors in Brussels, under the purview of the Sub-Committee on Trade.  The forum’s main goals were to encourage Belgian and other European businessmen to look at ASEAN for business expansion plans, and to highlight the ASEAN region’s economic importance.  END.
