HONOLULU 17 April 2019 – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, led by Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno and the Filipino community in Hawaii, commemorated the 77th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) through a film screening of two World War II documentaries at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu on 07 April 2018.

The documentaries “Manila 1945: The Rest of the Story” and “Corregidor: The Road Back” were produced by Spyron AV Manila, which was represented at the event by the company’s Managing Director Miguel “Lucky” Guillermo,.

In his Araw ng Kagitingan message, Consul General Jimeno noted that the commemoration this year was in the form of a film screening “in the hope that more people will gain a deeper appreciation of the event.”

The Consul General said that the aim is to highlight the role played by Filipinos, particularly Filipino-American veterans of World War II, who bravely fought alongside American troops but whose role is often unrecognized. He added that the Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration is important as it highlights the Philippines’ strong relationships with the US and Japan at present.

Around 200 guests attended the Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration including, Hawaii legislators, representatives of various US Indo-Pacom units, students, and Filipino-American veterans and their families.

Governor David Ige and Admiral Philip S. Davidson spoke on behalf of the State of Hawaii and the US Indo-Pacom, respectively.

Governor Ige noted that the Filipino community is a community that has succeeded through hard work.  He expressed gratitude to the Filipino-American veterans, and said that “their legacy lives through each of us.”

Admiral Davidson noted the continuing partnership between the Philippines and the US through a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.  He cited the assistance provided by the US in Marawi as well as the participation of US troops in the ongoing Balikatan exercises in the Philippines. END
