PH Embassy in Pretoria Reaches Out to Nampula in Mozambique

PRETORIA 17 April 2019 — A business and consular delegation from the Philippine Embassy in Pretoria visited Nampula in Mozambique on 04-07 April 2019 to promote relations with the local government of the province, touch base with the Filipino community there, and to extend consular services.

The delegation was headed by Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerard B. Angeles. He was accompanied by the Embassy’s Protocol Officer and Attaché Dennis Punzalan, and Honorary Consul Donald Tulcidas.

The delegation’s mission started with a courtesy call to Nampula Province Governor Victor Borges on 05 April 2019. During the call, Ambassador Angeles thanked the Governor for the hospitality extended to the Filipino community in Nampula. He also invited the Nampula government to be part of a big trade delegation from Mozambique scheduled to visit the Philippines in May 2019.

The Mozambican delegation will be headed by no less than the country’s Trade Minister Ragendra Berta de Sousa. Philippine businessmen who visited Mozambique last September 2018 have found niches for the Philippines in food, beverages, and health care. Mozambique has also expressed an interest in availing of Philippine training in the field of agriculture and fisheries. Governor Borges, a former Fisheries Minister, has expressed an interest in entering into a partnership with Philippine businessmen to develop tilapia production in Nampula.

The afternoon of 05 April 2019 and the following days found the delegation engaging with the Filipino community of Nampula and nearby provinces. Filipino presence in the area stands at about 200 persons, who are mostly professionals and businessmen. The consular outreach itself was held at the Woodrose Academy, owing to the substantial number of members of the Filipino community who are teachers and school administrators.

The consular mission resulted in the processing of 35 passport renewals, three new passports, one report of birth, and six legalization services. END
