WINNIPEG 26 April 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto successfully conducted a joint consular outreach mission in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 23 to 26 March 2019.
Mounted for the second time as a joint undertaking, a total of 1, 208 passports were processed by both foreign service posts. At least 92 Filipinos took their oath to reacquire or retain their Philippine citizenship under Republic Act 9225. Other services included legalization of documents and submission of documents for civil registry.
The eight-member team from the Consulate General was headed by Deputy Consul General Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez, while the five-member team from the Embassy was headed by Minister and Consul General Alan Deniega. Mr. Ronaldo V. Opina, Philippine Consul, a.h. of Winnipeg, extended assistance to the delegation.
Manitoba is home to over 80,000 Filipinos, per 2016 Canada census. As it is part of the Consulate General in Toronto’s consular jurisdiction, a regular outreach mission is undertaken.
Both the Embassy and the Consulate General ensured that more than the usual number of applicants would be served, considering that this is the first outreach mission for 2019 in Manitoba and mindful of the surge of interest for the new 10-year validity passports for adult applicants, as well as for the growing number of Filipinos who have availed of the benefits of Republic Act 9225.
