JEDDAH 26 April 2019 – In the workplace overseas, many female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are subjected to threats of physical abuse. This is especially a recurring problem among female OFWs who work as stay-in household service workers in Saudi Arabia on 20 April 2019.

In view of this reality, the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah has begun a project to teach female OFWs, specifically the female wards at the Bahay Kalinga, the art of self-defense.

“With the basic self-defense techniques they will learn, it is our hope that next time they go abroad, they would be in a better position to protect themselves from physical harm,” said Consul General to Jeddah Edgar Badajos, as he presided over the project’s launching.

The Consulate General launched the project as part of its year-long Gender and Development Program with the support of Jefrey Sales Estrada Karatedo International (JSEKI SHOTOKAN) founder Jefrey Sales Estrada, and NAP Awitin Shotokan Karate International (NAPSKI) founder Norma Awitin Pedregosa.
