PH Consulate Attends IT Summit in HK Featuring Tech Giants

HONG KONG 30 April 2019 — Consul General to Hong Kong Antonio A. Morales attended the fourth edition of the Internet Economy Summit (IES) with the theme, “Digital Economy Redefines our Future” at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) on 15-16 April 2019. He was accompanied by Attaché Luz M. Iglesias.

Consul General Morales took the opportunity to visit the only Philippine-based Exhibitor, the Euro CB (Philippines) Inc., at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition), a concurrent event of the Internet Economy Summit. The company, which manufactures Bluetooth devices and other accessories, has been doing its business in Cebu, Philippines for over 15 years and currently employs almost a thousand Filipino workers.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor delivered the welcome remarks where she highlighted her promise of innovation and technology at the start of her first term of office as one of the major policies of her government. She also updated the audience on important initiatives she has implemented, including the introduction of a supertax deduction of up to 300 percent for research and development (R&D) expenditure incurred by private enterprises on 2018-2019 fiscal year, and the setting-up of Innovation and technology venture to co-invest with local start-ups.

Other initiatives include the HK$10billion allocation for the establishment of two research clusters focusing on healthcare technologies and artificial intelligence and robotics technologies, HK$20 billion into Research Endowment Fund of the Research Grants Council to provide sufficient funding for R&D at universities.

Cyberspace of China Deputy Director Yang Xiaowei, Standing Committee of the CPC Hangzhou Municipal Committee Member Chen Xinhua, Deputy Director Lu Xinning of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong, and China Internet Development Foundation  President Ma Li were the Summit’s other VIP guests.

The two-day Internet Economy Summit gathered prominent and top-notch local and global speakers and guests who shared their insights on how today’s businesses can leverage date-driven innovations to capitalize on the unprecedented opportunities in the connected world. Some of the featured speakers were Alibaba Global’s Business Group President Angel Zhao, Amazon Web Services General Counsel Bob Kimball and Twitter’s Vice President for Asia Pacific Maya Hari.

The Summit was aimed at achieving a vision into a digital future with disruptive influence in areas of fintech, virtual marketplaces, internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, enterprises 4.0 and more. The event also presented strategies for businesses in harnessing new data and technology transformation to create value and catalyst intranet-led growth in the new economy. END
