JAKARTA 03 May 2019 – The Permanent Mission of the Philippines to ASEAN launched “Sem sem but no sem”, a cooking video and cookbook of ASEAN noodle dishes at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia on 11 April 2019.

“Sem sem but no sem” aims to celebrate ASEAN’s unity amid diversity by showcasing delectable ASEAN noodle dishes that are delightfully different but distinctly ASEAN. These recipes reveal the rich history and cultural heritage of ASEAN countries, from native elements to foreign influences in the ingredients and the manner of their preparation.

Ambassadors of ASEAN Member States and their spouses demonstrated how to prepare Brunei’s Soto Brunei, Cambodia’s Khmer Curry, Indonesia’s Bakmi Goreng Jawa, Laos’ Khao Piak Sen, Malaysia’s Char Kuey Teow, Myanmar’s Mohinga, the Philippines’ Pansit Palabok, Singapore’s Laksa, Thailand’s Tom Yum, and Vietnam’s Phở.

The video and cookbook provide information on how to prepare these dishes in a practical and easy way so that people would be able to make ASEAN noodle dishes by themselves. In addition to the ingredients and cooking instructions, the video and the cookbook include information on the cultural significance and history of the dishes, and provide aspiring cooks as well as experienced chefs a deeper appreciation of ASEAN noodle dishes.

The video and the cookbook have been distributed through the ASEAN Secretariat and its social media channels.

The launch also coincided with the farewell lunch hosted by ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi in honor of Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN and Ambassador Elizabeth Buensuceso, who is ending her tour of duty in the mission after six fruitful and successful years in promoting Philippine interests in ASEAN, and contributing to ASEAN community building efforts.
