PH Participates in Asian Parliamentary Assembly Meeting on Sustainable Development

NARYAN-MAR 08 May 2019 – The Philippines joined parliamentary delegations from 18 Asian states for a meeting on economic and sustainable development in the northern port city of Naryan-Mar in Russia on 17 - 21 April 2019.

The State Duma of Russia, in cooperation with officials of the Nenets Autonomous District and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Secretariat, hosted the event. 

The discussions focused on the role of parliaments in supporting the implementation of the sustainable development goals specifically on poverty eradication, water and sanitation, energy (establishment of the Asian Integrated Energy Market), and efforts for economic growth; as well as environmental issues and measures to stimulate green financing. 

Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. of the 3rd district of Negros Oriental represented the Philippines in the meeting. He was assisted by Mr. Eric Dacanay of the House of Representatives Secretariat and by the Philippine Embassy in Moscow’s Political Section head Consul Anna Guerra.

Before flying back to Manila, Representative Teves dropped by the Embassy for a working dinner with Ambassador to Russia Carlos D. Sorreta and Embassy officials, and discussed the results of the inter-parliamentary meeting he attended.  There were also discussion on current developments in Philippine-Russia relations, particularly in the areas of labor, trade and investments, energy, infrastructure and transportation during the dinner.

The Philippines is a member of APA, an organization which aims to provide a forum for parliamentarians in Asia to exchange views and best practices in various areas of governance, as well as to foster cooperation and coordination among its member countries.  As of 2007, there are 42 member parliaments and 16 observers from among Asian countries.  END
