CHICAGO 20 May 2019 – On the occasion of the 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago will host a lecture by renowned Ateneo de Manila University History professor Dr. Ambeth Ocampo.

Titled “Rizal: The Hero as a Traveler,” Dr. Ocampo’s lecture will be held on 11 June 2019, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Elson Place Market Mix (beside Seafood City Supermarket) located at 5033 North Elston Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60630.

Dr. Ocampo is Associate Professor and former Chairman of the Department of History, Ateneo de Manila University. He served as Chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (2005-2007) and Chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (2002-2011), and President of the Philippine Historical Association.

As a public historian, his research covers the late 19th century Philippines--its art, culture, and the people who figure in the birth of the nation. He has published over 30 books, writes a widely-read editorial page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and moderates a growing Instagram and Facebook fan page.

He received the Grand Cross of the Order of Lakandula with the Rank of Bayani (2010), Presidential Medal of Merit (2013), and was conferred the Knight Grand Officer (K.G.O.R) in the Order of the Knights of Rizal last year.

In his lecture, he explores how national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, who traveled a great deal when air travel was but a figment of the imagination, was formed by his exposure to other lands, peoples and cultures. Looking back on Rizal’s travels, including a coast-to-coast trip from San Francisco to New York, Dr. Ocampo will shed light on “the hero, ourselves and the emergence of the Filipino nation.”

This special event is organized by the Consulate General, in  collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Sentro Rizal Chicago, National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), Order of the Knights of Rizal Central USA (KOR), Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF).
