Cook County Treasurer Celebrates Asian-Pacific Heritage Month

CHICAGO 21 May 2019 — In honor of the rich cultures, history and traditions of Asia and the Pacific Islands to the United States, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas hosted a briefing and reception at her office in Chicago on 10 May 2019 on the occasion of the Asian-Pacific Heritage Month Celebration.
Together with Consuls General from India and Pakistan and Deputy Consul General from China and leaders from the Filipino, Indian, Pakistan, Thai and Chinese communities, Consul General to Chicago Gina Jamoralin attended the luncheon reception and briefing by Treasurer Pappas about the activities and projects of the Cook County Treasurer’s Office.
The County Treasurer also gave a comprehensive briefing of the services provided by her office, including online payment services to make the services accessible to the public.
Consul General Jamoralin thanked Ms. Pappas for the presentation which are translated in different Asian languages including Filipino for the large Filipino communities residing in Cook County, Illinois. Treasurer Pappas also announced that she will soon be appointing one deputy Treasurer from the Filipino-American community.
The Cook County Treasurer in Illinois oversees the second largest property tax collection and distribution system in the United States. The Cook County Treasurer’s Office also receives and keeps the revenues and other public funds of the County and all money and funds authorized by law to be paid to the County Treasurer and disburse the same pursuant to law.
Ms. Pappas has held the post of Treasurer of Cook County since 1998. She was elected to a sixth four-year term in November of 2018. A granddaughter of Cretan immigrants to the U.S., the Cook County Treasurer is a lawyer with a degree in counseling psychology. END
