05 March 2014 - The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver participated in the first “ASEAN Culture and Cuisine Day” held at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on February 27.
The event, organized by UBC’s Centre for Southeast Asian Research and dubbed “Of Rice and Roots”, brings together representatives from four of the five ASEAN consulates based in Vancouver (Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam), Tourism Malaysia and the Indonesian Batik Association. It aims to rekindle and restart awareness of Southeast Asia at UBC through various displays of arts and crafts, food, information materials, including audio-visuals, particularly related to education, tourism and culture.
The Philippine booth showcased Philippine made products such as native handicrafts, finely embroidered fabrics, jewelry, bags, etc. Philippine delicacies of “puto and kutchinta”, variety of sweets and candies and Philippine fruit juices were served for guests to sample.
Professor Brian Job, Director of UBC’s Institute of Asian Research delivered the Welcome Remarks. A symbolic pouring of different kinds of rice in a common bowl by the four Consuls General was also done during the event. END
