PH Participates in Drafting Guidance on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Emergencies

PARIS 31 May 2019 — The Philippines participated in the Experts’ Meeting on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Emergencies on 21-22 May 2019 at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris, France.

Philippine expert Dr. Jose Jowel Canuday of the Ateneo de Manila University-Department of Sociology and Anthropology shared Philippine experience and perspectives on how to safeguard ICH in times of emergencies.

He also reported on the importance of ICH not only as a source of identity and pride, but also as an inspiration for healing, dialogue, reconciliation and peace-building during the difficult phases of rehabilitation and reconstruction of Marawi.

Based on the knowledge and experience shared by experts during this meeting, a draft guidance on ICH in emergencies shall be prepared for examination of the ICH Committee at its 14th Session, which will be held in Bogota, Colombia in December 2019. 

National Commission for Culture and the Arts Cultural (NCCA) Communities and Traditional Arts Section head Renee Talavera was also present during the meeting as observer. END
