PH Embassy in Riyadh Hosts 1st ASEAN Qur’an Reading Competition

RIYADH 31 May 2019 — In observance of this year’s Holy Month of Ramadan, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh hosted the 1st ASEAN Qur’an Reading Competition Finals on 24 May 2019 at the Movenpick Hotel in Riyadh.

It was held in cooperation with the Council of Filipino Muslim Elders led by Engr. Allan Macabangkit. 

The event also coincides with the 50th Anniversary of Philippine-Saudi Arabia relations, and the Embassy’s chairmanship of the ASEAN Riyadh Committee for 2019.

Prior to the final competition, the Embassy conducted several elimination rounds for the Filipino readers to determine the top three who will represent the Philippines.

Montasir Guiabal, Alimodin Samama Ali, and Ismael Barani Ambola emerged as top competitors after the final elimination round held in the afternoon of 24 May 2019 at the Embassy premises, where competitors from the Western, Eastern and Riyadh Regions came to compete.  

In attendance to grace the occasion are members of the diplomatic corps, particularly from ASEAN embassies, ambassadors of Sri Lanka and Mauritius, guests from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, World Assembly of Muslim Youth members, members of the local and Philippine media, Embassy officers and staff, and members of the different Filipino-Muslim communities in the country.
