Prominent Filipino Tenor Performs in Myanmar

YANGON 31 May 2019 — In celebration of the Philippine National Heritage Month in May 2019, the Philippine Embassy in Yangon successfully staged the Tanglaw ng Pamana Concert on 24 May 2019 at the Inya Ballroom of the Meliã Hotel.
The concert was attended by 240 guests composed of members of the Diplomatic Corps, students from various Myanmar public and international schools, Myanmar nationals, and members of the Filipino community in Myanmar.
The event featured prominent Filipino tenor Professor Ramon "Montet" Acoymo, accompanied by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Stephanie Alexis Cruz on the piano, with special performances by the Philippine Embassy Youth Choir.
Ambassador to Myanmar Eduardo E. Kapunan, Jr. shared that May, which has been declared as National Heritage Month since 2003, is a special month in the Philippines, as Filipinos all over the world celebrate its heritage, roots, and culture through festivals, exhibits, concerts and other celebrations.
He explained the importance of Filipinos taking active participation in continuously creating a consciousness and respect for the Filipino cultural history. The Ambassador further shared that the Embassy has decided to mount this concert not only to celebrate the various facets of Philippine culture, religion and history, but to also showcase Filipino talent.
Professor Acoymo was a former University of the Philippines Diliman-College of Music dean and is a multi-awarded music director, musician and conductor. He has helmed the Ateneo College Glee Club, Coro San Benildo, the Kundirana of La Salle Greenhills as well as the PINTIG Ensemble.
During the program, he performed various songs including “The Prayer of St. Francis,” “Nessun Dorma,” Jose Rizal’s “Ultimo Adios,” Filipino folk songs “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” and “Pobreng Alindahaw,” Filipino Kundiman “Pakiusap,” and “Pilipinas Kong Mahal”.
The Philippine Embassy Youth Choir, under the tutelage of Third Secretary and Vice Consul Cruz, performed Filipino songs “Sa Ugoy Ng Duyan” and “Leron Leron Sinta.”
The choir was established in January 2019 and is composed of students--17 girls and 10 boys--ages 10 to 16 years old with 23 from Myanmar, two Ghanaians and two Filipinos coming from various schools in Yangon. The group is taught both English and Filipino songs and rehearses twice a week at the Embassy. END
