Guyanese President Keen to Improve Relations with the PH

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA 07 June 2019 — Guyana President David Granger expressed his hope to improve cooperation with the Philippines to Ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro during the latter’s accreditation ceremony as Non-Resident Philippine Ambassador to Guyana on 22 May 2019 in Georgetown.

President Granger also noted that Guyana welcomes the opportunity to develop further its bilateral and multilateral relations and anticipates the strengthening of the two countries’ relations during Ambassador Mauro’s tenure as non-resident Ambassador.

In her remarks, Ambassador Mauro said the Philippines is interested in fortifying its relationship with Guyana particularly in the areas of economic cooperation and trade.

“Trade relations between the Philippines and Guyana has been very minimal, but we hope that we can work at improving our relations especially in the area of investments. My government also admires Guyana’s expertise in hydro-electrical technology and its ability to improve local communities so we are interested in pursuing a cooperation project in this area,” Ambassador Mauro said.

The Philippines and Guyana established diplomatic relations only 10 years ago in September 2008. But as early as 1983, Filipino missionary doctors were already rendering service in Guyana, particularly in Woodlands Hospital.

Today, around a 100 Filipinos live and work in Guyana in a wide range of fields including education, forestry, mining and health, whose contribution to Guyanese society was acknowledged by President Granger during the ceremony. END
