19 March 2014 - Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Alex G. Chua witnessed the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development of a Pilot Non-Revenue Water Reduction Project on March 17 in Yangon City.
The MOU signed between the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), Manila Water Company, Inc. and Mitsubishi Corporation aims to improve the Yangon City government’s provision of clean and potable water. It is in line with President Thein Sein’s commitment to a “people-centered” development as it is expected to directly benefit the people.
President Thein Sein, in his speech at the 2nd Development Forum in January this year, identified water supply as one of the government’s seven priority areas in the remaining months of his administration.
In his congratulatory speech, Ambassador Chua underscored the significance of the collaboration between the Myanmar government and the companies from the Philippines and Japan, as a testament of the international community’s confidence in Myanmar’s reform process. The Ambassador reiterated President Benigno S. Aquino III’s hope that the Philippines and Myanmar will be brought closer through increased business linkages and more people-to-people linkages. END
