PH Embassy in Washington D.C., University Of Maryland Explore Collaboration Opportunities in Agriculture

WASHINGTON, D.C. 19 July 2019 – The University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources met Philippine Agriculture Attaché to the United States Dr. Josyline C. Javelosa to explore possible collaborative projects between the university and Philippine institutions in the field of agriculture and fisheries on 15 July 2019.

Dr. Javelosa was briefed about the University's land-grant mission with a commitment to eliminate hunger and malnutrition, preserve natural resources, improve quality of life, and empower the next generation through world class education. She was briefed by UMD Professor and Family and Consumer Sciences Program Leader Dr. Jinhee Kim,  together with Agriculture Program Leader Dr. Darren Jarboe, both of the UMD-CANRs’ Extension Department and Agricultural Experiment Station-Research Coordinator Rubie Mize.

CANR's five strategic initiatives were also discussed. These include establishing a healthy food system and ensuring global food and nutritional security; ensuring a clean and healthy Chesapeake Bay; advancing innovative, profitable and sustainable agricultural production systems; improving human, animal, and environmental health; and optimizing urban environments through design, green technology, and community engagement.

Dr. Javelosa likewise discussed some collaboration interests of the Philippines including in-border protection and risk management of transboundary animal diseases such as the African Swine Fever; modernizing livestock production; agricultural biotechnology; developing an effective system on data collection and management from scientific literature; and enhancing the country's agricultural extension system.

The UMDrepresentatives aslo expressed interest in supporting research and extension programming as well as policy with the Philippines, and in piloting the development of a system similar to the U.S. research and extension service particularly in the Mindanao province, among other possibilities. The potential collaboration among UMD-CANR, Philippine universities, and other agencies were also discussed. END
