PH Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat Meets UN-Habitat Executive Director In Nairobi

NAIROBI 24 July 2019 – Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Ambassador to Kenya Alex G. Chua met with the UN-Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif during an event hosted by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Nairobi on 28 June.
The officials briefly shared their views on the relevance of the UN-Habitat in steering the world’s cities toward sustainability, economic and social progress and inclusion. Both agreed that sustainable and inclusive urbanization for all is key towards progress and development.
In addition to her duties as UN-Habitat Executive Director, Ms. Sharif is also the Acting Director General of the UN Office at Nairobi. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Sharif was Mayor of the City Council of Penang Island in Malaysia.
She is a champion of Gender Responsive Participatory Budgeting which integrates gender perspectives into the governance process as a tool to mainstream gender into budgetary and development policy and planning.
UN-Habitat is the United Nations program working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. Recently, it held the 1st UN-Habitat Assembly on 27-31 May 2019 with delegations from 127 countries including four Heads of State and Government and 49 ministers out of the 2,900 delegates in attendance.
