PH Cuisine Takes Center Stage on “Mga Kwentong Pagkain”

HONOLULU 06 August 2019 — Sharing a plate comes with sharing a story. The University of Hawaii Manoa (UHM) Center for Philippine Studies held a workshop entitled “Mga Kwentong Pagkain” on 19 July 2019 to the delight of the students of UHM’s Filipino and Philippine Literature Program.
Guest presenter Philip T. Lim of Marigold Manufacturing Corporation (Mama Sita’s) presented a video on “A Philippine Flavor Journey” and a slideshow on the culinary history of the Philippines based on the research of Philippine author of “The Governor-General’s Kitchen and culinary historian Felice Sta. Maria. Both presentations showed how Philippine cuisine was shaped by local customs and traditions as well as the influences of other cultures throughout the nation’s history.
Also in attendance was Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu Deputy Consul General Angelica C. Escalona, who took the opportunity to update the workshop participants on Post’s cultural and community activities, including the successful Philippine Food Week in June and the launching of the Filipino Young Professionals Network in December 2018.
The workshop’s participants were likewise encouraged to support the Consulate General’s upcoming activities, and “give a stronger voice” to the Filipino community in Hawaii. END
