HONG KONG 07 August 2019 — In celebration of Pride Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong conducted “Mga Kulay at Ngiti ng LGBT 3: A Gender Sensitivity Orientation on LGBT Rights” last 21 July 2019.
About 40 overseas Filipinos participated in this latest Gender and Development (GAD) activity of the Consulate General.
Pink Alliance Policy Director Jerome Yau served as the principal speaker for the event providing a brief history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender plus (LGBT+) rights in Hong Kong and identifying the services offered by the Consulate General for social and health care.
Mr. Yau called on the participants to send their complaints regarding discriminative practices to the Equal Opportunities Commission, an agency which is responsible in implementing the sex, race, disability, and family status discrimination ordinances in Hong Kong. The Commission has the authority to investigate complaints, facilitate mediation and take legal action against offenders.
A film viewing of a short independent movie “Astray”, starred by Angel Aquino, Althea Vega, and produced by Nerissa Picadizo, followed the orientation.
The activity was intended to provide the participants with a better understanding of rights of LGBTs, to promote respect and equal treatment, and to give information on the services that are available to them in Hong Kong.
Pink Alliance is a non-profit and a non-governmental organization in Hong Kong which aims to advance the rights of LGBTs, particularly by advocating marriage equality. “Amidst the decriminalization of same-sex intercourse in Hong Kong, there is still no specific law that will protect LGBTs from discrimination.” Same-sex marriage is not recognized; and there are some cases that have been brought to court to demand equal rights of LGBTs such as employee benefits for those who have same-sex partners.
