AGANA 14 August 2019 - “Mabini tried to impress upon the new generation the value of nationhood, the value of freedom, the value of liberty, the value of caring for our country and countrymen,” Consul General Marciano to Agana R. de Borja said as the Philippine Consulate General in Agana and the Batangas & Southern Tagalog Association of Guam (BASTA) commemorated the 155th Birth Anniversary of Apolinario Mabini at the Consul General’s Official Residence in Jonestown on 29 July 2019.
Guest-of-honor and keynote speaker Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Secretary Francisco P. Acosta, together with Consul General de Borja and BASTA officers, led the traditional wreath laying at the statue of Apolinario Mabini, a donation by the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) Colleges of Tanauan in Batangas in 2017.
In line with the topic of nationhood, the Consul General also presented a video on “Build, Build, Build” on the Duterte administration’s flagship economic project.
During his keynote speech, Secretary Acosta said “that Guam was once home to one of our revered heroes is perhaps a fortunate historical coincidence. It helps us remember that age-old proverb, ‘once a Filipino, always a Filipino’…we are here to extend our grateful President’s gratitude to all of you for being the ‘lifeblood of our nation”.
Apolinario Mabini became the first Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary in 1899. END
