PH Embassy in Rome Leads ASEAN Day Celebration

ROME 15 August 2019 — Ambassador to Italy and current Chairperson of the ASEAN Committee in Rome (ACR) Domingo P. Nolasco led the ACR celebration of the 52nd Anniversary of the Founding of ASEAN on 08 August 2019 at Villino Pacelli in Rome.

The ASEAN Day was commemorated with the singing of the ASEAN Hymn and a speech from Ambassador Nolasco, followed by a toast and a cake-cutting ceremony. In his remarks, the Philippine Ambassador highlighted ASEAN’s success as a regional organization from its humble beginnings five decades ago.

The event was also a celebration of the richness and diversity of ASEAN culture through the region’s traditional attire, food, and cultural performances, as 2019 was declared an ASEAN Cultural Year.

Officers and staff, together with the family members of the Indonesian, Malaysian, Myanmar, Philippine, Thai, and Viet Nam Embassies participated in the event.

“This is an opportunity to know each other’s culture, as well as to promote among us appreciation for ASEAN culture, respect for diversity and a greater sense of ASEAN identity,” Ambassador Nolasco said.

Each participating ASEAN Embassy during the event presented a cultural performance, namely, Angklung Musical of Indonesia, Colours of Malaysia showcasing Malaysia’s traditional fabric and attire, U Shwe Yoe and Daw Moe dance performance of Myanmar, Cariñosa and Maglalatik folk dances of the Philippines, Thailand’s Four regional dances: Garland Dance, Long Drum Dance, Sticky Rice Basket Dance and Fan Dance, and Viet Nam’s Que Huong Toi song and dance performance.

The participants also had an opportunity to share and taste each ASEAN country’s traditional dishes such as Indonesia’s balado ikan, Malaysia’s nasi goreng, Myanmar’s mohinga and coconut jelly, Philippines’ chicken afritada and chicken adobo sa gata, Thailand’s pad thai and somtum, and Viet Nam’s spring rolls.
