PRETORIA 29 July 2019 – Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerard B. Angeles held a meeting with Mozambique’s Minister for Trade and Industry Ragendra Berta de Sousa and Minister for Agriculture Higino Francisco de Marrule on 19 July 2019 in Maputo.

Minister de Sousa is of the view that reinforced business relationships with the Philippines and other country-partners will help generate jobs to Mozambique by identifying and creating opportunities for business partnerships.

The Mozambican Trade and Industry Minister mentioned that he was impressed with the improvement of the Philippine’s Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) indices. He expressed interest on the process of how the Philippines was able to enhance its EoDB levels, hoping that he could adopt the same strategies for Mozambique.

Ambassador Angeles expressed the Philippine’s desire to pursue strengthened trade ties between the two countries. Ambassador Angeles invited Minister de Sousa to visit the Philippines together with a Mozambican business delegation to replicate the highly-successful visit by a Philippine business delegation to Mozambique last year.

The Ambassador likewise made a call to Minister Marrule, who expressed his admiration for Philippine agriculture, especially in the field of rice production.  He expressed his intent to come to the Philippines to visit the International Rice Research Insititute, with hopes of setting up a rice research center in Mozambique. The Minister likewise lauded the Philippine’s agriculture resiliency during disasters, and hopes that he could replicate that same strength in Mozambique.

The Philippines and Mozambique have ever-growing populations, and Minister Marrule is keen in inviting Filipino agribusinesses to come and invest in Mozambique. He foresees that both the Philippines and Mozambique could both profit in expanding bilateral trade in agriculture. END
