PH Consulate General in New York Conducts Sports Diplomacy

NEW YORK 18 September 2019 — The basketball team of the Philippine Consulate in New York participated in the 32nd North American Basketball Association (NABA) Tournament under the Albany Filipino American Basketball League (AFABL) team banner in Nation Harbor, Maryland on 30 August - 1 September 2019.
A total of 36 sports organizations and more than 5,000 Filipinos and Filipino-Americans took part in the competition or supported their respective teams during the event.
Most of the participants came from the United States Northeast, specifically the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New England region, Maryland, Washington D.C., Chicago, Virginia and Florida.
Teams from as far as Montreal, Winnipeg, and Ontario, Canada, and a team from Milan, Italy and some basketball organizations in the Philippines like Assumption College, Tigers Basketball and Community Basketball Association (CBA) also competed.
The NABA tournament is one of the most popular sports-oriented Filipino-American programs in the United States and boasts of being the training ground for present and future Filipino-American players at the collegiate, amateur, and professional levels. The tournament is regularly scouted by sports agents in the Philippines to identify possible recruits for university, professional, and national teams. END
