PH Consulate General in Los Angeles Celebrates 50th Anniv of UN Population Fund, 91st Birth Anniv of Rafael Salas

LOS ANGELES 02 September 2019 — The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles engaged the Filipino community in celebrating the Philippines’ 50th anniversary of partnership with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the 91st birth anniversary of UNFPA’s first Executive Director Rafael Salas, who was more popularly known as “Mr. Population”, on 19 August 2019.
In his message, Consul General to Los Angeles Adelio Angelito S. Cruz underscored the connection between issues relating to population and development. He also announced the implementation of UNFPA’s 8th Country Program in the Philippines worth US$20 million. “Projects under the 8th Country Program include those that support the full implementation of the Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health Act, the National Family Planning Programme and the Magna Carta of Women,”
Consul General Cruz showed a video featuring the life of Mr. Salas who took the lead in establishing UNFPA 50 years ago. His exceptional work is a testament to Filipinos’ ability to provide a world-class service.
UNFPA was instituted in 1969 and was formerly United Nations Fund for Population Activity. It is the United Nations’ main agency for reproductive health and other population-related issues. END
