CARSON CITY 08 October 2019 — Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez paid tribute to the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal during his official visit in Southern California from 13 to 16 September 2019.

The Ambassador led a wreath-laying ceremony on 14 September 2019 at the monument of Dr. Rizal, located at the International Sculpture Garden in Carson City, a timely gesture as the month of September marks the seventh anniversary of the statue’s installation.

The Ambassador conveyed his appreciation to the Carson City officials present, led by Mayor Albert Robles and Council member Jim Dear, and Jose P. Rizal Monument Movement-Kalayaan (JPRMM-K) chairman Chito Mandap for their combined efforts in giving the Philippine national hero a place in the U.S.

Also participating in the Ceremony were Consul General to Los Angeles Adelio Angelito S. Cruz, Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. Minister and Consul Gunther Emil M. Sales, and Deputy Consul General Ambrosio Brian F. Enciso III, Consul Rea G. Oreta, Information Officer Mary Grace “Joss” D. Leaño, and Protocol Officer Fernan M. Balicoco of the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles.

The Rizal Monument in Carson was a sculpture of renowned Filipino artist Abdulmari “TOYM” De Leon Imao Jr., and was the first statue to be installed in the International Sculpture Garden, a land dedicated by Carson City to “Heroes of Liberation, Freedom and Justice Around the World.

The statue was the very first and only life-sized statue of the Philippine national hero in the U.S.  West Coast.

Its installation in Carson City was made possible through the combined vision, efforts, and resources of an alliance of various Filipino-American associations in the region, headed by the JPRMM-K, and a grand gesture of friendship and solidarity by Carson City officials. The unveiling of the statue was held on 29 September 2012.END
