PH Embassy in Cairo Discusses OFW Protection with Egyptian Ministry

CAIRO 08 October 2019 — Representatives from the Philippine Embassy in Cairo held a follow up information exchange with representatives from the Ministry of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs on the promotion of the rights and welfare of Filipino nationals overseas on 30 September 2019.
The meeting is a follow through after the initial meeting between Ambassador to Egypt Sulpicio M. Confiado and Minister of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Ambassador Nabila Makram on 03 September 2019.
The delegation from the Embassy included Ambassador Confiado who was accompanied by Consul General Jose A. Cabrera III, Third Secretary and Vice Consul Bojer B. Capati, and Assistance-To-Nationals Assistant Walter C. Rosario.
Ambassador Makram conveyed the importance of the information exchange in order to understand the Philippine government’s programs in protecting the rights of Filipino overseas workers.
The briefing conducted by Consul General Cabrera highlighted the Philippine experience in the protection of overseas Filipino workers, including the social protective measures of Filipino workers from the pre-departure stage, on-site, and upon repatriation to the Philippines.
Present during the information exchange are members of an inter-agency cluster dedicated to protecting the safety of Egyptian overseas workers including the Ministry of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Technical Education, and Ministry of Manpower and Immigration, among others.
The information exchange culminated with a commitment between the Philippines and Egypt in the sharing of best practices in the protection of its migrant workers.
Ambassaodr Makram also discussed the possibility of conducting a study mission in the Philippines to see firsthand the government’s programs and processes.
Both the Philippines and Egypt share the common vision in promoting the welfare of their citizens abroad. END
