31 March 2014 - The officers and members of Yonkers Millennium Lions Club, led by their President Mr. Rene Punzalan and former President Ms. Emma Dumalag, donated US$3,000 to the Build A Shelter Project of the Filipino American community in the U.S. Northeast.
The check, received by Consul General Mario De Leon, Jr., is payable to the Philippine Jesuit Foundation (PJF) of New York and will be remitted later on to a partner organization in the Philippines that will construct permanent shelters for the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).
BASP has already funded the construction of its first village of 36 houses in Hernani, Eastern Samar in partnership with Gawad Kalinga (GK)-Philippines. BASP is now working on a second village in Giporlos, Eastern Samar.
“There is still much work to do in order to help the typhoon survivors get back on their feet again. Right now, they have critical need for housing and livelihood. That is why we are grateful to the Yonkers Millennium Lions Club for donating to BASP. This will allow us to build more houses and villages in in the typhoon devastated areas,” Consul General De Leon said.
The Yonkers Millennium Lions Club, part of Lions Club International, has 32 members who have been very active in supporting the relief and reconstruction efforts in the Philippines since November 2013 when Yolanda hit the Eastern Visayan region.
In April 2012, some of its members traveled to the Philippines to join a mission that conducted cataract surgeries for 52 patients and distributed 2,100 pairs of eyeglasses in Virac, Catanduanes.
Companies, organizations and individuals wanting to donate to the BASP may send checks payable to Philippine Jesuit Foundation with “Build A Shelter Project” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to the Philippine Consulate General (Cultural Section) at 556 Fifth Ave., New York, New York 10036.
