TOKYO 11 October 2019 — Deputy Chief of Mission to Japan Robespierre L. Bolivar encouraged young scholars from Southeast Asia and India to help “create a more livable, more sustainable, and more inclusive global community”,  in his remarks at the opening ceremonies of the 62nd International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences (IATSS) on 21 September 2019 in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture.

Deputy Chief of Mission Bolivar delivered his remarks on behalf of the Embassies of Southeast Asia and India. Representatives from seven Embassies attended the event, which marked the official start of the 52-day program for 23 young scholars from the ten countries of Southeast Asia, India, and Japan.

Over the next two months, the scholars will go through classroom and field training sessions on topics such as green technology and sustainable development, cross-cultural communication, leadership, and international cooperation.

Two Filipino experts from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are among the scholars joining the program. They were chosen through a competitive selection process.

The 62nd IATSS Forum’s theme is “Fostering Young Leaders in Asia.”  A 2018 statistics for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) show that over half of Southeast Asia’s population is within the ages of 20-54.

IATSS has been facilitating collaborative learning and research endeavors between Southeast Asia and Japan for the last 34 years. END
